They were existing manufacturing entities. As an example, Honda was a motorcycle manufacturer in the 1940's before dipping a toe into car manufacturing. And what does the market cap of Google have to do with anything? Not long ago it was north of 200 billion, so what? Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds threw billions at US banks a couple of months ago, does that mean they will throw in more after getting burned? Something like 8 trillion in stockholder wealth has evaporated in a fairly short period of time so there is a lot less money around, and those with investable cash are going to take a gimlet eyed look at what they are investing in. Which is probably why Elon Musk is throwing his own money into Tesla to keep things going...
