The ex-Soviet nations are littered with abandoned little plutonium thermocouple "batteries" about the size of a shoe box which were used to power remote weather stations, sensor networks, and other devices.

In a number of villages people have discovered they could break them open and use the pellets to cook their food, with predictable results.

The Apollo capsules for Moon missions used plutonium batteries. But the US was not as casual with nuclear devices, which is likely why Chernobyl didn't occur here.
