OT: Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) is designed for chronic pain caused by nerve endings not shutting off. It has a very long half life as far as medicines go, and is quite powerful, so people should be careful about overdosing. I use it on rare occasion for severe back pain. It is the only OTC medicine I look up in my PDR to determine how much I can safely take, and how often.

Tell him to take two before he goes to bed every night. Takes a couple days to build up in the system. Lot's better than motrin or tylenol. If it's real bad tell him to put a zip lock bag of ice under his lower back a half hour before going to bed. It will numb it and allow him to get to sleep.
