I didn't realize the subject was an Obama proposal. Sorry about that. I was speaking of community service, in general, as has been discussed many times hereabouts. We have had school programs for a long time and I've heard Rambi's reports from hers a few times over the years. We also have Ameri-something-or-other to give us a target for discussion. So there's plenty of fodder without Obama's proposal. As for his proposal, I'm likely to disapprove of it whatever it turns out to be. I find the whole concept distasteful.

Drafting them into community service for a strictly limited amount is not the same thing.

I think it's conceptually the same thing. Where they are different is the degree to which it presents a burden. If you are OK with the concept, then maybe the degree matters in your evaluation of it. If you have a problem with the concept, the degree is irrelevant.

Of course its not an absolutely identical action, but it is forcing them in to involuntary service.
