Observation.

How could farmers with pitchforks defeat what was at the time the world's greatest military during the American Revolution?

How do little pissant countries like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq defeat a half trillion dollar a year war machine?

When oppressed beyond a certain point, the human animal fights. If you ask him why he fights, he will most likely tell you it's because he wishes to be left alone in peace. The desire for freedom and liberty seems to be something that takes place on an almost instinctive level.

I'm open to other explanations than my pet "feral human" theory, but whatever the reason, if you dig through history, standing armies can only defeat standing armies, never militia. However well trained and well equipped, the trained fighter is no match for the instinctive fighter.
