Most of the time I think he actually believed what he was saying, but he was quick to make up data to prove a point that was absolutely out of thin air. Bush and Cheney believed in what the Neo-Cons developed as their plan of action and tried to make the facts support their actions. Congress went along because after 9-11 anyone who didn't go along with Bush would practically be labeled a terrorist, at the minimum they were being unpatriotic. Anyone who questioned what the Administration did was accused of supporting terrorism. I openly opposed invading Iraq along with a few others on a stock site I routinely posted on. I was of the opinion it would be a quagmire, be far more costly in dollars and lives then we were ever led to believe and unfortunately I was right. I got all sort of flak, mostly from many Republicans and many still defend Bush and his actions. Sadly many Republicans are taking the Carl Rove model of how to deal with those with opinions different from them, attack, slander, etc. truth means nothing as long as they put you on the defensive. Sadly this worked in 2004 as Kerry failed to react to the Swift Boats and other attacks. The truth has been totally ignored when it comes to the charges that the Republicans were making, unfortunately McCain took their advice and ran his campaign that way. Unlike Kerry, Obama fired back, while he did push the positives, he countered McCain's charges well. The truth, I believe, is McCain would have lost regardless of how he ran his campaign, but IMHO he wouldn't have lost as badly, and wouldn't have lost the respect of many of us if he had fought a cleaner campaign. Personally I wish McCain hadn't had to sell his soul to get the nomination, but after he did, having him campaign the way Bush's campaign was fought was just a matter of letting the side of the party he caved into run the campaign.
