Here is a very good release... Bell Canada!!!!

ADSL high-speed access solution now available for Internet service providers and telework applications

(TORONTO, October 22, 1997) -- Bell Canada today launched a service that will fundamentally change the way consumers access the Internet or their workplace LANs from home. The service, called ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) turns regular telephone lines into a super-charged link to the on-line world.

Bell Canada will make ADSL access available to Internet service providers as well as corporations with teleworking programs. Working with Bell, these service providers will make ADSL-based solutions such as high speed Internet access available to consumers.

Effective today, ADSL will be offered in the Ottawa/Hull and Qu‚bec City areas, and then gradually deployed in selected locations of Bell Canada's territory in 1998.

"With the introduction of ADSL, residential consumers now have the best and most competitive service available in the market" said John MacDonald, Chief Operating Officer of Bell Canada. "ADSL meets the growing needs for faster access to multi-media information."

Bell Canada's ADSL solution enables users to take full advantage of the Internet's potential. ADSL will also increase the efficiency of telework applications by making it possible to download large files such as databases or educational video clips.

Indeed, with Bell Canada's ADSL solution, information can be downloaded 75 times faster than with an ordinary 28.8 Kbps dial-up modem. ADSL will provide a download speed of up to 2.2 Mbps and an upload speed of up to 1 Mbps. At these speeds, users can download 100 pages of text in about a second; a typical web page would take about 1/10 sec. to download.

Bell Canada's ADSL solution operates over the telephone line, making it more secure than other solutions on the market. Another advantage is that ADSL allows users to surf the Internet and talk on the telephone at the same time. For example, a customer can make a telephone call or send a fax while downloading data at high speed.

Bell Canada's ADSL access solution is an important component of the company's information highway strategy. It opens up the possibility for consumers to access and use dynamic on-line applications such as real-time audio and video, enhancing the Internet experience for users. ADSL will also foster the growth of both hardware and software applications in the multimedia and high-tech industries. Bell Canada's ADSL represents the next step in the evolution of the Internet.

"This service is another example of Bell's commitment to improving and expanding the communications universe available to our customers while making their lives more productive," said Carol Morgan, Director, Business Development -- ADSL Services, at Bell Canada.
