Company Press Release Spire Corp. Establishes Denver Office To Be Headed by Expert on Renewable Energy Policy BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1997--Spire Corporation (NASDAQ: SPIR - news), which provides products and services to photovoltaics, optoelectronics and biomedical markets worldwide, today announced the establishment of an office in Denver, Colorado, that will support the company's activities in the Western and Midwestern regions of the United States and will focus on customers who are building complete photovoltaic module manufacturing facilities. ''The opening of our Denver office reflects the rising demand for photovoltaic module manufacturing equipment and will help Spire provide its state-of-the-art automated manufacturing equipment to a growing market,'' said Roger G. Little, president and chairman of Spire. ''With many utilities seeking to integrate solar energy into their generating mixes, and with President Clinton's recent challenge to place solar energy systems on one million roofs in the United States by 2010, the industry will need to grow substantially to meet demands for photovoltaic modules. I believe that increasing our presence throughout the country will position Spire to be an integral part of the industry's expansion.'' Dr. David Mooney, who joins Spire after serving as vice president and corporate secretary of a major telecommunications company for the previous two years, will head the new office. Earlier, Dr. Mooney served in several research and management positions at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the world's leading renewable energy laboratory, and worked directly with the office of the Secretary of Energy to help develop domestic and international renewable energy policies. He began his career at NREL as a physicist researching advanced photovoltaic materials and later served as a technical monitor on the Photovoltaic Manufacturing Technology Project (PMaT), a joint government/private industry partnership designed to advance photovoltaic manufacturing technologies. Spire is the world's largest supplier of photovoltaic module manufacturing and testing equipment.
