I don't think it was that high. I remember seeing some military poll that said it was more like 65% and that compared to 2004, the military vote for the Dem candidate increased from 15% to 25%. I would suspect McCain got a majority of the military vote because of his veteran and hero status. What's particularly striking is that McCain managed to get that high a military vote despite the overwhelming unpopularity of Bush.

Anyway, this is an academic discussion anyway. The military has usually been overwhelmingly Republican, because surprise surprise, the Republicans spend buku bucks on the military. So if you give me a sample of people who are overwhelmingly Republican and then tell me they voted overwhelmingly Republican, my response will be, "no shit sherlock". That's to be expected. It's elementary statistics.

BTW, conversely, this is why the Democrats are popular with minorities and the middle class. They spend a lot of money on those demographics. So it always boils down to where the money is being spent. Right now, the Republicans aren't popular, because they spent 8 years giving all the prosperity to a handful of people and raping the rest of us. Now they are realizing that in a Democracy, you'd better make sure your constituents are getting a piece of the pie, if you want to get re-elected. Follow the money, Ann.
