Although elections turn on many factors... I'd judge that that assessment is as valid as any --- the extreme unpopularity of Bush was a major factor.

Bush is now polling at lower public approval numbers than Nixon was on the day he resigned. (Have to go back to the 'dawn' of modern polling, to the 'fifties to find any lower Presidential approval number... and that was only a point or so lower than Bush is now).

As ex-Prez. Clinton put it: "Bush shot an Uzi's worth of bullets into the McCain campaign."

(It probably a near-miracle that McCain/Palin came as close as they did....)

Voter's wanted a new course for the country and Obama wisely used "Change" as a campaign slogan.

It's a cycle; the Democrats will have their chance, and no doubt not deliver what they promised, get sidetracked and then it'll turn back to the Republicans.
