As near as I can tell, it's because XBD has GS/MER/JPM etc while the other one has BAC/AXP/C etc. While they're all down approximately the same percentage-wise, in absolute dollar amounts the broker stocks are losing much bigger amounts. Normally that's a whatever, but a quick run through the weighting scheme suggests this may be an artifact of index construction using weighting.

Have I told you lately how much I love the non-weighted Dow? :)
