And the car companies have changed where they put their development funds. No need to put political control behind that, car companies try to follow where the money is.

Try is the operative word What do you think the net results of GM, Ford and Chryler going out of business would be? For the country.

The whole argument for government control over what types of cars get produced as something that benefits the "big three", relies on the idea that the government can pick the right strategies better than the car companies can. As poorly as they have done at times, that's a very questionable idea.

The government currently regulates almost every part of an automobile, including the MPG.
