FIRMS RESIST YEAR 2000 DISCLOSURE - Businesses not disclosing extent of problem, senator says By Brock N. Meeks MSNBC 10/22/97 *America's businesses are resisting telling regulators, their customers and shareholders the whole truth about the potential impact of the Year 2000 problem. That conclusion was aired Wednesday (10/22) during a Senate hearing. To force full disclosure, legislation might be needed, warned Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah ......... BENNETT ALSO disclosed the findings of a General Accounting Office report into the progress the National Credit Union Administration has made in assuring the nation's credit unions will be "year 2000 compliant." That GAO report warns that unless the problem is addressed, credit-union computer systems "may be unable to process transactions or produce accurate information simply because the date has changed." One in four Americans with some $326 billion in assets held by credit unions could be affected, the GAO said ........ FULL DISCLOSURE* Testimony presented Wednesday included the assertion that lawsuits from Year 2000 problems could top $1 trillion. "Despite that incredible figure, individual companies are not talking about what specific liabilities they face, or how they plan to manage their litigation risk," Bennett said. "I believe investors have a right to know." Bennett said he's considering legislation that would require companies to fully disclose their potential risk and the financial impact they face as a result of dealing with the problem...... NOT GOOD ENOUGH Bennett's staff searched SEC records to determine what kind of disclosure companies had made about the Year 2000 problem. Result: not much. French Y2K site an2000.fr This site mainly contains information about all festivities around the year 2000. The IT problems are also mentioned at some places. It contains an interview with Jacques Chirac, president of France. Parts of the site are also available in english; makes nice reading!
