Yes but if we could lover our overall cost to theirs, then the grand total would be less.

Bingo! The thing is, none of them asked to be "protected". If we were to ask, they'd tell us they didn't need protecting. If we objectively look at our "enemies" militaries, it's obvious we have WAY more capacity than we'll ever need.
