"We have over 2,000 religious groups functioning in the U.S., half of them Christian, and almost all of the 2,000 have their own symbols," says Mr. Melton. Should Summum prevail, he expects that several of them will seek to have their icons added to those on public display.

The proliferation of such symbols, he says, can be seen in military cemeteries. In addition to the traditional cross, the crescent and the Star of David, the Department of Veterans Affairs authorizes 36 other headstone symbols, including the Buddhist Wheel of Righteousness, the Mormon Angel Moroni and an atomic symbol for atheists. Last year, the government settled a lawsuit filed by widows of Wiccan servicemen, by adding the pentacle to the list.
