Marriage is a classification when applied to human unions. One that went unquestioned for a long time. Over time we have associated legal terms, established rules of conduct, and standards for treating people who are married as a legal entity for which we can rule on legal matters.

The oldest association I can think of is 'legitmate child', which by itself does not involve legality until societal associations are attached, like child support or inheritance. Legitimate is a synonym of legal but does not always involve the formality of jurisprudence. A legitimate complaint, for example is simply one that can be qualified by facts but does not necessarily cross the line of law breaking. Some people say street acts are not legitimate theater.

We can also classify other human bonds legally through contracts or by establishing a new term that is more applicable to a variety of human unions. The term 'Civil Union' has been raised for that purpose but some are adamant about the term 'Marriage' being extended to other forms of union.
