I don't understand what this "welfare" word means. These programs should be strengthened such that they provide assistance in the case of SS and coverage for the elderly in the case of medicare. And we need to prioritize our spending to fund them with high priority....and they need to be paid into by everyone, to the degree of progressivity required to make them solvent while we work to also make them efficient and less costly.

It's not an option to let elders (i would argue every citizen) go without medical coverage...and it's obscene to allocate disproportionally to the military to project power to remote regions of the world, provide a protective umbrella to countries who themselves provide health care to their citizens, while we have no solution to this problem at home.

That sort of mentality leads to the generous 90% retirement pension programs that bankrupt local and state governments.

No one would argue that it is important to ward against abuses that lead to these situations.
