McCain's base was the media. He said that, they said that and then McCain went to the right and lost the presidency. Palin was an absolute nightmare for the McCain campaign. Not only did she bring out the right wing crazies (she's average! she's average! elect her to the presidency because she is so average!) for all the world to see, it firmed up support for the Democrats. The right wing crazies would still have voted for McCain and he could have continued with the 'I have more experience even though I'm an incompetent lunatic' argument. With Palin, McCain had to throw that argument out the window. McCain lost a couple of months of attention when Palin went inexplicably out of the spotlight just after she went onto the ticket (!), winked like a teenager through the debate, had horrific interviews, became mired in Bristolgate, troopergate, Bridge to Nowheregate, per diemgate, Wasilla debt and wardrobe malfunctions and then publicly went after McCain for exiting Michigan. With that kind of attention on her foibles and failures, McCain got pushed into the shadows and his campaign became the Palin Family Circus 24/7. As horrific as Bush and the Republicans have been, McCain had a chance to run outside of the GOP and not slather their failures onto himself...he screwed it up royally all by himself.
