My dad is invested in GM and Ford both, but I'm not sure if it's stocks or bonds.

I bought those bonds 4 years ago just before the bad news. Now pretty much worthless but still paying 6%. OTOH I bought Chrysler bonds many years ago when they were in the tank. It was fun saying I loaned money to Lee Iacocca. I figured the govt would bail them as they were making the M1 tanks and they did. Iacocca came up with the mini van and paid the bonds off in 3 years. The return was 26% a year.
