It needs to be cheap, too. The best proposal that I have seen, is that they will use the phase of the power to indicate electricity price. This is easy to detect by devices (freezers etc.), and if the power grid is undersupplied, phase will automatically change. So if there is a sudden lack of supply, many devices will turn off automatically (freezers, fridges, heating, aircon...). Cute :-) Of course they need to provide the supply until the freezer decides that more cooling is needed, no matter what.

They're already running field tests with that in Denmark, and have done for a couple of years, as far as I know. Denmark is currently also replacing electricity measurement units, so that it is possible to measure electricity usage in a very detailed level, delivering status via GPRS or internet, of course. It's the end of predefined prices for electricity :-)
