BellBoy, I know you asked George the question but here is an article you may find of interest. I have not heard that long distance was a problem but if anyone can enlighten me I'd appreciate it.

Perhaps more than pricing or its technological
hurdles, ADSL is threatened by the tension
between eager, would-be service providers and the
regional Bell operating companies presiding over
the necessary copper. Regional Bell Operating
Centers, typically slow to the punch with news
services like ADSL (witness ISDN), have even
been accused of denying service providers access
to the necessary "local-loop." As a result, as
Signet's Games sees it, the ADSL market at large
is suffering from the FUD factor: fear, uncertainty,
and doubt. "ISPs are under the impression that
the phone companies are out to get them," he
said. "So they're not making their move."

I've read a lot of articles about xDSL and while all this fighting is going on the cable companies are signing people up at attractive prices! I see ADSL as an enterprise solution and cable/satellite reaching the home users.
