Do you think the government was putting a gun to Novastar and New Century, forcing them to write subprime loans? That wasn't my impression.

What about all the Alt-A that destroyed IndyMac and Downey? Were those the fault of government as well? HELOCs? Those too?

I really find it hard to believe that government policy lay at the root of the RE bubble, except inasmuch that it encourages home ownership over renting via the mortgage interest tax deduction and RE cap gains allowances. The major government fault as far as I can tell was the extreme lack of oversight on the use of leverage in mortgage-backed securities.
