I think the core Democrat values are still the same. However, my own priorities have changed. During times of peace and prosperity, we all had time to think about moral values and pontificate about how other people should live their lives. At that time, I sided with Republicans. But then Republicans sent 4,000 kids to their deaths in Iraq, spent their way to $10 trillion in debt, lowered taxes to ridiculous levels for the rich, refused to support research and investment into alternative energy, and assaulted our Constitution to buy us extra security at the expense of our guaranteed freedoms. That's when they lost me.

Democrats want to spend $150B on alternative energy over the next 10 years to help us get to oil independence. They want to get us out of Iraq. They want to spend money on Americans, not Iraqis. And they want to increase taxes on the rich to bring us back to the optimal tax structure of the 1990s.

All of these issues rank far higher to me than worrying about how other people live their lives and whether it fits in with my religious ideas. Again, I'll say, the Republicans that want to rebuild based on their religious ideas are completely out of touch with the 3 top issues and opinions in this country: 1) the economy, 2) foreign policy, and 3) alternative energy. That's why Obama won. He ran on doing something about all 3 of those, which is what people care about. No one gives a shit about gay marriage, when their retirements are in the toilet.
