>>>Who did I forget?<<<

Nobody as far as I recall.

I would add that:

1) Ronald Reagan helped guarantee Gerald Ford's loss by delivering such an effective run for the nomination, and

2) Ted Kennedy did the same for Jimmy Carter.

Both were doomed to failure in their reelection bids regardless.

California's Wind-Fed Fires Burn Thousands of Acres (Update2)

By Dan Hart

Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- A wind-whipped wildfire scorched more than 2,600 acres outside Los Angeles today, destroying homes and shutting some highways, a county official said. Up the coast near Santa Barbara, another fire was reported 40 percent contained.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Sam Padilla said the fire northwest of Los Angeles near the town of Sylmar, which began late last night, was being fanned by gusts as high as 80 miles (128 kilometers) per hour. About 10,000 people were asked to evacuate the area, he said, while Interstate 5 was shut in part.

``We're likely to have localized gusty conditions for the rest of the day into tomorrow morning,'' said Dave Samuhel, a meteorologist at private forecaster AccuWeather.com in State College, Pennsylvania.

Santa Barbara and Sylmar are experiencing near-record heat and dryness, Samuhel said. He expected the temperature near the Sylmar fire to reach as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) and the mid-80s near Santa Barbara.

California's so-called Santa Ana fire season traditionally runs from September through November, the U.S. Forest Service said. The very dry Santa Ana winds blow from offshore into Southern California, bringing hot, dry weather, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

Conserve Power

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, speaking in a televised press conference, asked residents to conserve power. He said the area may have to resort to rolling blackouts to reduce strain on the power grid.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power shut down two main transmission lines in the area of the blaze, which is being called the Sayre fire, after the area where it started.

A mobile home park north of the Golden State Freeway was abandoned by firefighters at about 6 a.m. after about 30 of the trailers were ablaze, KTLA-TV reported on its Web site.

Sylmar is 26 miles (41 kilometers) northwest of Los Angeles, in California's San Fernando Valley. It's northeast of the city of San Fernando. Interstate 5, a 1,381-mile highway, runs the length of the U.S. West Coast, from the Mexican border to Canada.

Montecito

Ninety-two miles north of Los Angeles, firefighters are battling a wildfire threatening the celebrity enclave of Montecito that forced about 13,000 residents to flee. It is about 40 percent contained.

The fire began on Nov. 13 in the Los Padres National Forest and has burned 1,800 acres (728 hectares). More than 2,200 firefighters have been deployed and 1,500 homes are threatened, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire.

One hundred and eleven homes have been destroyed, and nine damaged, Cal Fire said.

Montecito is southeast of Santa Barbara. Michael Douglas and Oprah Winfrey are among the celebrities who own property there.

A third wildfire broke out this afternoon near Corona, and has scorched about 1,000 acres, Cal Fire said. The blaze is moving toward Yorba Linda, and has forced the closure of the 91 freeway in the area, Cal Fire said.
