If the GOP and the DEMs went to a primary system that had ALL 50 STATES's PRIMARIES held on the SAME DAY (as you proposed) then I believe that, yes, that's EXACTLY what would happen. The candidates would focus mostly on the big, vote-rich states, and ignore the smallest ones. (But, I believe that this would happen less under the 'four or more regional primaries' system that I suggested.)
