After former Governor Murkowski appointed his own daughter Lisa to replace him as US Senator, the angry citizens of Alaska passed a ballot initiative to require an election for such a vacancy. There's a theory that the governor can still appoint a temporary senator, but it would result in an immediate court challenge and probably backfire. It's probably a moot point though. Right now Stevens appears to be losing. We'll know better on Tuesday night.
