Not necessarily. After former Governor Murkowski appointed his own daughter Lisa to replace him as US Senator, the angry citizens of Alaska passed a ballot initiative to require an election for such a vacancy. There's a theory that the governor can still appoint a temporary senator, but it would result in an immediate court challenge and probably backfire.

It's probably a moot point though. Right now Stevens appears to be losing. We'll know better on Tuesday night.

So does Senator Dodd, but it'll probably never happen. He is too powerful to face our justice system.
