"SUV's are popular because they can carry a lot of stuff and haul trailers."

I'd say half of them are sold to townies who never haul anything, don't need the room and never go off road. They like a big, heavy tank of a vehicle that makes them feel safe and powerful - women too. My dad was in advertising, and the right advertising can sell Pet Rocks(tm) and snowballs to eskimos.

I grew up with dad explaining EXACTLY how TV commercials were forming my opinions and desires. Now, I'm pretty much immune.

GM has many small cars, hybrids, and has sold electric vehicles.

Where? In your fantasies?

"The company I work for is still using electric Chevy S10's.
The Chevrolet S-10 Electric was introduced in 1997 by General Motors, updated in 1998, and then discontinued. Unlike the EV1, of the 492 S-10EVs assembled about 60 were sold to fleet customers, rather than just leased through restrictive programs, mostly due to the prior Department of Transportation crash-worthiness evaluations done on stock S-10 pickups. As a result, a few Electric S-10's can still be found in use today. The fleet life of many of these are ending in 2007 and 2008 and they can be acquired in government and business auctions. Those 440-some that were not sold were collected, dismembered and crushed just like their EV1 siblings."

They will soon have the Volt out.

Let's see if they don't go bust first.

Do you understand the use of advertising to create a market?

So you think marketing can sell a glamoured up truck?

Yes.

SUV's are a bit like the pig with lipstick. Ever see a gray haired retiree with an SUV? Not many. They don't need them. SUV's are sold because of the middle leter in SUV. Utility. SUV's are popular because they can carry a lot of stuff and haul trailers. Yes they have improved the ride, but not the handling, and only limited improvement in gas mileage. The SUV is here to stay.

SUVs were promoted as the ultimate family car. Something every family must have......that kind of marketing is very effective with Americans.
