Carl, The gigantic expenditures on Iraq are mostly hidden "off budget". The economy turned down long before The Vietnam War was over, and it turned down because of the spending on that war.

Debt as a % of GDP is not necessarily a key ingredient. It is what we are buying with that debt. If we are investing in our future, then the question is whether or not such investment works. The Bush debt is not being invested at all. It is being thrown down a hole. It is like borrowing to build a new plant rather than borrowing to fund current operations. One is possibly positive and one is certainly negative.
