Companies like Toyota, Nissan, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes are all headquartered in countries that provide national healthcare for ALL of their citizens...Hmmm...That does make a big difference in the competitive landscape...when foreign transplants come to the U.S. notice that they hire young, healthy workers and locate plants in the South where they can avoid union organization of their workers. GM and Ford have achieved comparable quality on many of their new cars, crossovers, and SUVs...new studies show that 8 of the top 10 most productive auto plants in North America are owned by the Big 3 automakers (and use union labor)...it's the legacy pension and health care costs of retirees that are difficult for GM and Ford to deal with...Let's hope Obama can move aggressively towards some type of new nationalized health care system -- it would help many businesses in MANY industries. This country spends more on health care as a % of GDP than any other country...and we are not ranked in the top 25 in the quality of the outcomes of our health care interventions...and we still do have over 45 million Americans with NO healthcare coverage at all...Talk about a moral issue.
