That's the scandal that kept Shoeless Joe Jackson, with this career second highest batting average out of the Hall of Fame. Landis..... made his bones and claim to initial fame presiding over the Famed Standard Oil Trust lawsuit. The outcome of that trial saw Standard Oil broken up into 39 to 41 components companies ....depending upon who's accounting you use. It's pretty humorous, as once the company was broken up into all of these different pieces, the stock values that were unlocked made the composite portfolio quadruple in price, within the ensuing year. And the same people owned the stock.... ie JD Rock, his brother William, Flagler et al.... You would not believe the massive 180 dollar a year dividends that S.O paid to it's shareholders some years in the 1880's.... the dividend was equal to the share price some years, as I recall from some of my reading. this of course in a world of no taxation on dividends and not the tax structure to punish dividends compared to long term capital gains. That has had as much to do with all of the blance sheet, income statement scams as anything me thinks... Our Tax code has rigged the system to look for Quarter to Quarter growth, year to year growth to expand price and the PE multiple placed on a stock. That has lead to this endless stream of Off balanced sheet special purpose entities, the SIV's..... etc. coming full circle, my personal all time favorite pitcher is Tom Seaver, he was a joy to watch growing up. He had the high leg kick and his right knee ended up on the dirt of the pitcher's mound on each pitch. He was a joy to watch on his home victory days when he was a guest on the post game "Kiner's Korner" interview program.... he always had his uniform on and his requisite pair of white slippers. A true hall of famer. John
