Many if not most stock buybacks are announced for the psychological lift they can bring to the stock. If they are smart, they can sell puts rather than buy shares outright. This increases income/decreases share cost on any purchases. If Amgen goes this route, they can acquire a lot of stock and have lots of cash to spare.
I think Amgen's need to get something to fill their pipeline is very beneficial for GLFD, and an accelerated R&D schedule certainly can't be ruled out.
