Yes, it would be a big risk.

But it could be the kind of dramatic change in the industry that would make it an asset to the country as a whole.

Think about this. If GM fails, are we going to have to go to Toyota to build our war vehicles? If the airline manufacturers are next, will we let them fail? And if they fail, will we have to buy our war jets from China and Russia?

We'd better start realizing something very fast. We cannot let our manufacturing base fail during this downturn, because when the economy recovers, those industries will never come back. We have to protect everything now, or we will have no revenue streams when the economy recovers.

This idea that we can only bail out the rich is the first thing we have to let go of.
