K: What I didn't like about the military vintner is its anti intellectual culture and its stringent conformity which is a catch 22 for developing good generals. i.e. if one has to conform all the time, by they time they make it to general, all the creative thinkers have been purged out of the military. Also it is a myth the military needs so much conformity. The best soldiers in the world are the Isralie army and they do not get that way through blind conformity, they get that way by encouraging the best thinkers. The fact of the matter is, that the people on this thread could beat the people on the unfit thread in a war, without breaking a sweat. V: It's only that way/was that way at your grade level, Koan, the higher up you go the more freedom (intellectually ) there is/was. Today's military is even more open to debate and thinking as it needs its volunteers to re-up and in both urban and mountain warfare a lot of tactical decisions are pushed down to the squad level. Its just like having a good job now--except with the added possibility of getting killed.
