The point is that our imported oil is not representative of true demand. People demand to drive, that is true but they do not demand to drive the largest SUVs that border on semi trucks. The reason the market for SUVs is what it is is largely becuase of the massive tax credits and lobbying Detroit has done to push these on the American consumer. Consequently, the "demand for foreign oil" is increased beyond the core consumer demand. The demand is there, but it comes from US auto makers.

The amt of energy required to power an escalade is much greater than that which is required to power a fisker. For one thing you need to look at the miles per hour of gasoline equivalent for electric vehicles (there is lots of info on wikipedia on this).
