I'm well aware of recapturing the gain, but the fact remains that the tax policy encourages over consumption of vehicles > 6000lbs GVW. You loose the most money on the first year or two of ownership, but heck, if half that money would have been lost in tax, why not?

Or course you see the same thing in other areas as well, like buying a new computer every year, or another tractor, etc. You are correct, that technically the IRS can make you justify the business use, but in practice this does not happen much. I know a logger who bought a new $90K piece of equipment, then retired within a year, and left it sitting unused in his front yard. The IRS did indeed harass him about it. Don't know what he finally did, but the machine is not in his front yard anymore.
