More change to believe in....

HONO LULU — U.S. Senator
Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, said he
will not alter the way lawmaker’s
pet projects are financed when
he takes over the powerful Senate
Appropriations Committee in
January.
Watchdog groups for years have
pressed for more transparency in
how the Senate and House appropriations
committees operate,
with particular emphasis on the
financing of pet projects that are
placed into annual appropriation
measures. These are commonly
referred to as pork-barrel projects
or earmarks.
They also have called for committees
to hold public hearings on
appropriations bills and allow for
them to be placed on the Internet.
President-elect Barack Obama has
also called for reforms of the system.
But in an interview with The
Honolulu Advertiser, Inouye said
earmarks are a congressional
prerogative, and added that he
will not change committee procedures.
“It will be the same,” he told the
newspaper.
