One thing that would help is if we could figure out the extent of the problems. Not knowing is considerable fear and making things worse.

The ones that seem to understand seem totally freaked out.

I'm not sure about that.......Paulson claims to understand but is no longer freaked out. Personally, I think things are fukked up on a number of levels and will be fixed as we go along, meaning the economy will limp along as we go through it.

Think about it......the problems are huge.....housing, banks, cars, the consumer etc so I don't think its possible to be moving along that much faster than we are. It took at least a decade to create these problems.....they won't go away in a matter of a few weeks. Plus we have a lame duck president in place who far from gets it.

Bottom line: I don't think we as close to the cliff as the stock markets would have us believe.....people are still shopping, restaurants are still busy, life is still going on etc. Remember the markets have predicted ten of the last 3 recessions. Not that I am saying we won't have a recession but that it may not be as bad as the stock market seems to be predicting.
