Zimbabwean Police Attack Rioting Soldiers, ZimOnline Reports
2008-12-02 07:52:55.490 GMT

By Brian Latham
Dec. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Zimbabwean police fired tear gas at rioting soldiers in the capital, Harare, after a group of about 50 military personnel began beating money changers and breaking shop windows, ZimOnline said, citing unidentified witnesses.
Troops rioted for the second time this week because they are struggling to withdraw cash from their bank accounts, the Johannesburg-based news agency said today. Crowds of money changers and youths in the street threw stones at the rioting soldiers before police restored order, Zimonline added.
Zimbabweans are limited to withdrawing 100 million Zimbabwe dollars a week from their bank accounts. That’s the equivalent of about $5 on the black market, where most residents exchange their money.
