Corruption is major over the decades. Ever since the Civil War. My father tells the story of asking his father about voting for the road man for like the umpteenth time even tho it was well known he took the money and paved his friends driveways and nary a dirt road. But papa did it out of loyalty and 'he's a good man' mentality.

A Russian friend visited and was shocked to find it was so like Russia to her... it is a land of serfs. I don't think most the country can understand that. TX and FL are not serf land. Nor is Virginia, that is upscale land. NC? Not sure how they linked into what they have done, but the mountain folk are still the mountain folk, it is more diverse.

MLK Jr understood the south... that poor whites were serfs, just as blacks had been slaves, and both still were held down, and the poor whites maniuplated to uphold a way of life that was what the rich whites wanted.

it is not in the interest of the powers to be to have an educated population. and it never occured to them to pay their white serfs more than a dollar a day anymore than it occured to them to free their black slaves. it is all about profit and control. they don't like poor whites anymore than they like blacks. and why hasn't it changed? even as blacks have worked to rise up here... the poor whites have yet to do that.

perhaps the strangest thing to me here is to be called "Miss J" as I am the daughter of the local landowner. where I come from, far far away, that is wierd. I am what is seen here (SI)... a bit of a dense, etc :). It is quite uncomfortable to be called Miss J. there are things I love about it here... as my friend said about the people... they have souls as wide as the russian steppes. but they expect to stay poor. to stay uneducated. to expect nothing. to say 'thank you' if the landowner gives them a few dollars.

eeek. sorry. I will desist for a moment.
