In designing its newest plant, in San Antonio, Toyota is trying to tackle the problem by building a clinic at the factory to provide a wider array of treatments and services than a typical factory medical office.

It would be interesting to know how Detroit unions would respond to this.

“Our health care costs have doubled over the past five years,” to more than $11,000 a year per U.S. plant worker, said Ford Brewer, assistant general manager for health and wellness at Toyota’s North American manufacturing headquarters.


This TOTALLY shoots down the argument that the non-union plants somehow don't take as good care of its employees as the union plants do.

11K/year is good health care; you can't argue with that; you can provide first rate health insurance anywhere in the country for that.

Yet, TM builds better cars less expensively. How?

They can do it with fewer employees because they don't have the unions telling them, "You can't use a robot for this" or "You have to have TWO employees to lift that part" or "You have to pay these guys even though they don't work here".
