I agree that there's something big afoot. I can't shake this feeling that here in the US at least, we are living lie. This was the basis for the fraudulent cancer on Wall Street -- the legitimate money has been made, and now it's time for outright thievery.

The primary disconnects: consumerism that far outstrips the income obtained by the production of something useful. The manifestations: a debt bubble and fraud, to make up the gap. Now that those two mechanisms have been exposed, there's trouble brewing.

The problem is wider than the US though, with global production outstripping demand -- a true deflationary setup. Accommodating monetary policy eventually reaches a limit where people don't have room for 'stuff' any longer and the game forcibly ends.

But the disease does not, and here's a great anecdote of how rabid and empty the lives of many Americans are:
