>>Unions are THE problem. Without that problem GM's cash position would be just fine.

I agree with Dave here. Without unions, Detroit might very well be profitable. We'd have millions of additional people living around the poverty line and working in signficantly worse conditions, but that's really nothing of Dave's concern. The free market would dictate that the workers of America would live in poverty while the executives and shareholders rake in billions, so that's the way it should be.

Unions arent the problem, what is is that union wages have given others the competitive edge. But thats just one part of the problem. What about GM having 7 divisions. Is there an difference between a pontiac, a buick and a chevy? Add to that the critical role dealers play in local communities. Car industry as existed in the 50s and 60s finally has to change. Job losses will most certainly be part of that process. Govt might be able to help by guaranteeing pensions, health ins etc of retirees to remove that cost from the equation. Also wages need to fall some. At $72/hour, union worker making $150K with bennys. Either you want to have a car industry that employs folks at somewhat lower salaries or you want to give it up to asian manufactures...thats the real choice before us now.
