I only point out that any mild recession is going to do nothing to "cure" the problem of overconsumption. People will think, "That wasn't too bad," and will go back to the same mentality that led to this mess. I don't know what your definition of a depression is, other than the 1930's, but I doubt you want the government to stand by while we have an extended recession, Japan-style.
