You are correct, and one can include all of the shysters on Wall Street that figured out how to package up all of the good and not so good mortgages and sell them around the world, and the swell folks at AIG that insured those mortgages, but in reality didn't have the reserves to cover even 2% of them,
the banks that played the game of leverage, placing bets 40-80X their capital, and the regulators who were on the take or just plain stupid, and the FED who provided the crack to begin with, the politicians who were just a few years ago praising the new
'record breaking home ownership' of the US...

I could go on, but you all know the score.
