I think the really bad storms of the past will always be the worst. We've got advanced warning now, which people in the past didn't have.

But we do have vastly larger coastal populations. And storms can be completely unpredictable in both intensity and direction. Ask the people in Punta Gorda; Charlie was supposed to be a cat 2 hitting the Tampa area one minute, 45 minutes later it was a cat 4 heading for them with a ~1 hour warning. Nothing to do but pray. You can plan for that but you can't run.
