Yes.

I believe that was one of the two main observations that the article advanced.

(And, not really much of a surprise! Considering where generic GOP candidates have been polling at most of the year - especially as the election drew closer. Although the election result, to a certain extent, represented a 'rejection' of McCain... McCain was still viewed favorably by larger portions of the voting public than most any other national GOP candidate.)
