"The whole story is not adding up." I agree that much remains unknown. (Yet it remains a fact that Pakistan --- feeling itself out-matched by it's larger and more powerful neighbor India, and with active territorial disputes over Kashmir and Jammu --- has LONG followed a military policy of trying to avoid a two-front war at all costs.) That explains why they have supported the Taliban for so very long (to keep their Western neighbor from allying with either of Pakistan's rivals: India or Iran), and so they could keep most of their military attention focused on their Eastern frontlines with India. The support and fielding of terrorist proxy armies has been a fairly low cost way for them to assert themselves in the region. (Also, with the mostly Pastun Taliban... keeping them fighting over a weak and divided Afghanistan has keep the Pastuns --- largest ethnic group in Pakistan and largest in Afghanistan --- from ever being able to unite into a "Greater Pastunistan", which likely would bring about civil war in Pakistan and it's dissolution.) They support these terrorist groups because they believe it is in their national interest to do so. (Or, at least the military and it's oligarchs has believed this for a long time.) The military's Dictators have also long used such militant activity and threats to keep themselves in power --- it was a co-dependent kind of thing. Perhaps now threatened by the Democratic elections....
