There was a Canadian political consultant (not aligned with any party) on the tube on Friday discussing what happened with the vote subsidy issue, and he described it thusly (I'm paraphrasing of course) --

"Stephen Harper has always had the belief in politics that when you hold somebody up against the wall with a knife at their throat, they have no other option but to submit -- however, that's not correct, because sometimes they can knee you in the groin and try to resist instead, and that's exactly what's happened here"

I laughed for at least 15 minutes after hearing that description

Harper's in the soup now -- he either has to fall on his own sword, or he has to eat crap and also appear that his lowly opposition can tell him how to govern -- what a complete and totally ill-advised screwup
