IMHO we have done a better job in Afghanistan than any other foreign power before us. I attribute this to a difference in goals. Russia wanted to punish the country for assassinating a general and use it as an excuse to subjugate the country and gain a warm water port. Many of their enemies wanted freedom from tyranny. We went there to topple a terrible tyrannical dictatorship and return power to the natives. Our enemies there are people who want to subjugate others.
