There is a lot more than marketing that goes into these decisions. You don't discontinue a product just because someone in marketing perceives it to be a loser. Marketing is a small part of the decision process.

Apparently so, to the chagrin of the company, its shareholders, work force and now the taxpayers.
Among its many problems, GM has in fact exactly a brand problem. The name GM (and Ford or Chrysler) conjures broad images of appeal only in rural america these days. Young folks are far more likely to buy a foreign car...these points are not universal you see, but generally true enough to be a major issue. The brand is busted and that's a serious problem, not easily overcome. It'll take absolutely amazing introductions and incredible marketing (yup, marketing is more than market planning, which is extremely important by the way) to turn this around.
